Solar streetlights are becoming increasingly popular in Nigeria due to frequent power outages, high fuel costs, and the need for reliable community lighting.
They are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and easy to install. However, like any technology, they come with challenges.
If you’re planning to install solar streetlights or already use them, it’s important to know the common problems and how to fix them quickly.
1. Low or Dim Lighting
Cause:
- Weak batteries that no longer hold charge
- Dust-covered solar panels reducing energy absorption
- Using low-quality or undersized lights
Fix:
- Clean solar panels every 2–3 months
- Replace batteries after 3–5 years
- Always choose the right wattage and lumen capacity for your project
2. Short Lighting Hours at Night
Cause:
- Batteries not charging fully due to poor sunlight or faulty solar panels
- Wrong installation angle of solar panels
Fix:
- Adjust panels to face direct sunlight (ideally south-facing at a 15–30° tilt)
- Check and replace faulty panels if necessary
- Upgrade to larger capacity batteries for longer performance
3. Light Not Turning On Automatically
Cause:
- Faulty or incorrectly set controller
- Damaged wiring connections
Fix:
- Reset or replace the controller
- Inspect all wiring for loose or damaged connections
- Ensure installation follows manufacturer’s wiring guidelines
4. Pole Instability or Tilting
Cause:
- Poor foundation during installation
- Heavy winds or soil erosion
Fix:
- Use strong concrete bases (60–80 cm deep)
- Reinforce with bolts and ensure the pole is properly leveled
- Inspect poles periodically for stability
5. Theft and Vandalism
Cause:
- Solar streetlights in unsecured areas are easy targets
Fix:
- Use anti-theft bolts and tamper-proof screws
- Engage community watch or install in secure locations
- Choose integrated all-in-one models that are harder to dismantle
