As discussed earlier, Insulation is a vital component in any home that aims to be energy-efficient. Typically placed in areas where air escapes or where heat transfer occurs, such as between the stud cavities inside the walls and in the roof, it is the easiest method of conserving energy from thermal losses in a home.
Several types of insulation materials are available for different uses, but for emphasis on home building, we have 3 major types:
- Rockwool batts and rolls– this is the most popular form of insulation material in Nigeria and is made of molten mineral/stone into blown wool. It is widely preferred for its high density, thickness and ability to withstand higher temperatures than other forms of insulation in Nigeria. Rockwool insulation comes in flexible rolls and rigid boards and can be laid easily in roof structures or wall frames.
- Glasswool rolls– also known as Fibreglass insulation (sometimes called Rockwool in generic lingo), this is a less dense form of insulation but with equally good thermal properties. It comes primarily in 1inch or 2inch thick rolls covered with aluminum foil on one side. Because of its relatively cheaper price than Rockwool, fiberglass insulation is very popular with builders and home contractor in Nigeria. It also has excellent acoustic properties for soundproofing.
- Spray foam insulation– is a relatively new form of insulation in Nigeria, but rapidly getting popular especially in industrial insulation. It is used to seal leaks and gaps inside existing walls. Liquid polyurethane is sprayed into the cavity of the wall, where it then expands and hardens into solid foam.
Whichever form of insulation you chose, always ensure it provides sufficient coverage for planned areas along with adequate thermal and acoustic protection.
